This is me trying to capture what it’s like sitting out by the fire pit at our family cottage on nights when the moon is full and lighting up the bay. It’s one of the most beautiful and grounding things I have ever witnessed. I have been hanging out beneath the pine trees on those rocks by the water’s edge for 55 of my 60 years, and I wanted to see if I could put it into song. There are three tiny islands nearby that have the coolest names. One of them just so happened to rhyme with ‘rocks’, so there it was. The last verse is simply me projecting myself into a future in which the cottage may no longer be a part of my life, except for in memory. A quiet, final song to bring us home again at the end of Part Two. The boy is found.

Lyrics

Man on the moon, shining down from the sky on a north Ontario lake / Boy on the rocks gazing out from the shore, drinking in all his two eyes can take / It’s a river of diamonds that lights up the bay / Washing your worries away / By the islands of Jupiter, Mikado and Fox he is now and forever that boy on the rocks / Crackle of spark breaks the stillness of night as the campfire smoke paints the air / Time comes to rest by the dance of the flames through a lingering thousand mile stare / As the firefly fairies ride smoke curls afar, right there you know who you are / By the tall pines of Jupiter, Mikado and Fox he is now and forever that boy on the rocks / Well, doors fly open and boys run through, bursting at the seams for what’s to come / Some roads circle back but some go on and leave you anywhere but where you’re from / Man on the moon looking down on a lake from a north Ontario sky / Shining his light ‘cross the shores of the bay, like a watchman keeping an eye / And on a sidewalk surrounded by city for miles, an old man looks up and he smiles / At the warm thoughts of Jupiter, Mikado and Fox / He is now and forever that boy on the rocks / Now and forever that boy on the rocks / He is long as forever that boy on the rocks
