From the recording Crimson & Closure
The original demo of Southampton Sunset began with what is now Part One (last song, side one). It continued with a second cycle of orchestra strings - a clarinet taking the front half of the song, and a sung back half to bring it home. In that demo, I found myself channeling Tom Waits singing Gavin Bryer’s ‘Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet’. (Those of you who are familiar with that magical recording can imagine how moving it could have been were Tom to really sing this one. Me, not so much!) Sensing there was something bigger to be had, I went back and wrote words for the front half. For the record, summarizing an entire life lived in three lines just about did me in. (Apologies, Mr. Webb, for the use of near rhyme.) And thus concludes this songwriter's journey. Thank you for keeping me company. I’m so glad you were along for the ride.
Lyrics
What is life but our window of daylight? / And what is fate but our measure of brightness? / From the moment we rise up, we try hard to wise up and share love with those who delight us / Come the end of our summer’s day shining as the last of our flame meets horizon / Sound the pipes in the distance to take us to the shore where our boatmen await us / Pray we cross having earned well our long rest / With the grace of Southampton Sunset
