From the recording Crimson & Closure
When I was first starting to write songs, I found an early kindred spirit in Scott Milligen, a terrific drummer and budding producer. We had fun trying to put together some of my efforts to date, and one of them was this rather ambitious mini-epic about the a young couple who maybe weren’t quite as far along as they’d hoped to be at that point in their lives. (Prophetic lyrics for years, as it turned out.) This is my Pink Floyd song, and was made even more so in this 2022 reimagining. I am embarrassed to admit that I was thirty-three when I heard Dark Side of the Moon for the first time. Listening to it from front to back was life altering and I’m sure this factored into my idea for my ‘Trip to Eclectica’ concept experience. Roger Waters once observed that not enough songwriters had the patience to let a song ‘breathe’. The opening of this one is me heeding Roger’s good advice. Please keep your arms inside at all times until the turntable comes to a full and complete stop.
Lyrics
Some go by map and some by star, some just play it where it lies / Some go so fast, some so far, some are too afraid to try / Some go by veil, some unseen, some have nowhere left to hide / Some ride coattails, some genes, and some are categorically denied / Some go by brawn, some by brain, some will drop out and re-apply / Some go in sin, some insane, some just reek of cut and dry / If you’d have asked me if I saw the two of us glory-bound on a Greyhound with a stop at every fork along the way, I am sure I would have laughed at you and said don’t be absurd / What fate has dealt I should have known, sure as the fall that follows pride / But some day you’ll have the promised stone for the ring you like to hide / What we have in love is more than worth the price - yeah it’s the loaded dice it takes to turn the tide / I’m hanging in, holding on and I’m glad you’re along for the ride
