I think the inspiration for this one came from some distant cousins who’d got into some trouble, yet who were bound by circumstance - for better or worse - to stay together. I always imagined a woman singing it. Indeed, there were no shortage of real world examples to choose from and at one point I thought about adding “Hilary’s Song” in parenthesis. My guess is she was kind of trapped in her marriage knowing she might have a chance to become the first woman President, but not not a hope in heck if she were that and the first divorcée. The original was done on guitar. A week before my 60th birthday, I arranged and recorded this more retrospective version on the piano.

Lyrics

I wander lost along the streets we used to haunt / Holding hands with the shadow I cast / Turn my eyes away from lovers floating by / See our reflection in the glass / You say it just happened and you want me to believe / You say you could never love anyone but me / I took for granted what we had, had what it took / I sang along but I heard different words / Upon my shoulders you may lay a share of blame / Is this the penance I deserve? / You say it just happened nothing meant and nothing planned / Kinda like a Valentine we once drew in the sand / How dare you think my swift forgiveness is assured / Wager all we have will not be lost / Summertime is over in the garden of our love / Will it rise again beyond the frost? / Well I, I'm going to need some time before I can start to understand / Yeah I, I gotta Wall to Climb to find the heart to take your hand again
