From the recording Crimson & Closure
The inspiration for this one came from a true story about friends of ours whose younger teenage son was dating a slightly older teenage friend of the family. The matriarch of the girl’s family wasn’t a fan of the union and, so the story goes, was instrumental in sowing the seeds of their eventual break-up. Of course, it was all just teenage love and much ado about nothing in the long term. Alas, their houses would become divided in real life, too, but it wasn’t ever about the two young lovers.
Lyrics
Two young hearts, family friends, they fall in love without a net / Swords are drawn, lines are crossed, Montague and Capulet / She’s much too old the boy is told / You two aren’t meant to be / You’ve had your fun and now it’s done, in time you both will see / The conscience wrestles, the conscience guides / But in Matters of the Heart, well the heart decides / Two young hearts stay the course, Romeo and Juliet / Ties that bind, choking hold, bloodlines caught in tourniquet / The subtle signs to undermine become more obvious / A mother’s pill of poisoned will leaves not much to discuss / Castles crumble in rising tides but in Matters of the Heart, well the heart decides / Two young hearts, wearing down, they bow to pressure from within / Family ties, worn and frayed, no return to where they’ve been / While bridges burn and waters churn, they share a final scene / By river’s edge they drive a wedge and pray their wound is clean / Time may heal what blood divides, but in Matters of the Heart, well the heart decides / Let the heart decide
