After some woodshedding at the piano I stumbled upon the hauntingly beautiful, full chords that appear in this composition. On a parallel front, I'd had a notion to try to write a song using only expressions that include body parts. After compiling a sizeable list, I then tried to pull out ones that might shape some kind of narrative. Armed with these great chords, I sat down at the piano late one Friday night - in a good frame of mind - and started extracting a melody out of the mitt-full of available notes presented by the complex chords. It’s hard to believe that, in the end, it’s maybe three or four chords total, but with the Brian Wilson trick of changing up the root on the left hand, it sounds like more. (I think there may be a little surf up in my melody as well?) And only eleven or twelve unique words used to form a three-minute tale of a lover confessing to their partner about something bad, the partner reacting, reflecting, and ultimately forgiving. An exercise in minimalism that my son said could be 'a lost Radiohead track’. OK Computer is another favourite, so you can imagine the smile on my face after that.
