This was a funny one for a middle-aged man to be writing, but I kept reminding myself of Randy Newman’s observation that songwriters should be prepared to go anywhere to find a song. I picture a high school setting where a cute but shy boy is singing about a certain girl he adores, but she happens to be dating the team's self-centred quarterback etc. I doubled the low voice an octave higher thinking it might be two people singing to each other in a kind of split-screen, 'love is blind' duet. It’s fun to try these things and hey, there are no wrong answers if it's all in your imagination.
Lyrics
I wish I had a way to make you understand / Wish I had a way to make you see / The way he leaves you on your own to go with friends / It's not the way it’s supposed to be / How long can a heart take a beating, knowing he can’t feel the same / You know when they’re goin’ through the motions, it’s time to run the clock and end the game / I’m wishing that I could show you that you should find somebody new / And maybe then I would show just how good I could be for you / Oh, won’t you make my wish come true / When was that last time you smiled inside your heart / Last time you felt a lovin’ touch / I know the pain of reachin’ out for what’s not there, a pain that soon becomes too much / So how long can you hope that all will end well, while you’re shivering in a storm / You know when a love has lost the fire you gotta find another flame to keep you warm / I’m wishing that I could etc. / Won’t you make my wish come true / If it takes a thousand times my weight in pennies tossed, I will be waiting for you with fingers crossed / How long will it take for you to notice / What’s a boy to do? / One chance is all I’m begging for / One chance to prove that I’m the one for you / I’m wishing that I could etc.
