This one owes its origins to an earlier, more intricate song of the same name that I wrote in 1998. The title was a snippet of a lyric in Emerson Lake and Palmer’s ‘Pirates’, which struck me immediately as a great metaphor for chasing an elusive dream. For an entire generation now the unfulfilled nature of these lyrics has weighed heavily on my conscience. The release of this project is in many ways me finally getting around to shaking that monkey from my back. The soupçon of merry-go-round music that kicks off is my nod to the orchestra tuning in Sgt. Pepper, and the stacking harmonies at the tail end of the bridge is a little tip of the cap to the Fifth Dimension.
Lyrics
One day you wake up and find yourself at the crossroads of now or never / Last chance for going after the one thing in life you treasure / Your rent’s due, but you’re through with life on the merry-go-round / So drop the reins and come and take your lane / We’re Eldorado Bound / Road Maps and shortcuts do no exist on a journey to feed the soul / No shady deals with El Diablo, no habla Español / A moment’s doubt will find us out and send us straight to the hounds /
You wanna win you gotta go all in / When you’re Eldorado Bound / Make the trip or let it pass you by, either way they’ll crucify / But no barb cuts deeper than the daggers of never having tried / So who knows where the journey leads to and who says when we’re there / Once around is all there is, stay home if you dare / And motherlode or dead end road, you keep your feet on the ground / Boom or bust it’s dust to dust / When you’re Eldorado Bound
